Welcome to Mindful in 5, where busy professionals find your peaceful oasis to thrive in complex work environments. I am Spiwa Jefferson attorney, certified mindfulness practitioner and author of the Mindful in 5 book series. Here to guide you to a clearer, softer and more supported life. Join me and your fellow Mindful Ninjas as we explore science-backed mindfulness strategies for successful leaders that you can implement, starting with just five minutes a day. Elevate your work, empower your life, work higher, live stronger. Let's go. Happy New Year. Happy New Year.
Spiwe Jefferson:I am not a New Year resolutions fan, so this is not my way of suggesting you should make them, but if you do, today we're going to talk about a common challenge that many of us face as we set new goals and resolutions for the new year, feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of keeping these habits for an entire year. It's easy to get caught up in the idea that we need to be perfect and make sweeping changes all at once, but the truth is that lasting change takes time, effort and, above all else, consistency. So the insight I'd like you to try on for this week is called Just Today, Repeat aloud after me, Go on, Nobody's listening. Just today, I'll give you an example. Those of you who know me know that I have been going to the gym at the crack of dawn for decades. I never set out to go to the gym for 20 years. Who would? I would have never done it if that was my target. But at the beginning of every year I recommit to continuing to go to the gym, but not even for the entire year, For just today. So even when I don't feel any enthusiasm for going, I think, well, I guess I can manage a visit just today. Try that. And before you know it, a few days, a few weeks, a few decades of just todays have gone by and you see or feel the results. Do I make it to the gym every single day? No, I don't, but I'm okay with that. There are sometimes days or even months that go by where I don't go, but I don't beat myself up over it because I know that as long as there's breath in my body, I can take another shot just today. So take a softer approach to your goals.
Spiwe Jefferson:Remember that mindfulness is all about being present in the moment without judgment, and we are often our own worst judges, aren't we? It's okay to move at your own pace Instead of being hard on yourself and striving for perfection. Give yourself grace. Allow yourself to feel a sense of guilt-free peace and clarity in every moment. Make space for freedom, for mistakes and growth when things don't go as planned.
Spiwe Jefferson:So if, for example, you are determined to establish a better mindfulness meditation practice this year, even if all you do is start with just two to five minutes, consistency is much more important than getting it exactly right for one hour one time. In my opinion, the journey is more important than the destination, because it is along the way that you pick up important qualities like clarity, focus, discipline, resilience and the ability to pick yourself up and keep coming back to your goal for just today. So, as you move forward with your new habits, try to stay present and focused on. Say it with me just today. It's even applicable when life gets hard, when you're trying to kick a bad habit or overcome heartbreak or deal with a difficult situation. You don't have to survive all year, but just today. Sometimes it's enough to get through just this moment. So this week, when you set out to do something new, don't worry about the long road ahead. Focus on doing it just today, Until next time. This is Spiwe Jefferson saying be mindful and be well, even if it's just today.
